Subconscious

Acrylic on Canvas, 20” x 30”, 2024

I often get ideas from listening to music. Sometimes I see colors, and other times shapes. For instance, when I first listened to Rachmaninoff's 1st piano concerto, I envisioned a blue horse near a light blue lake in an orange field. This inspired me to develop a scene featuring the horse. Initially, the story was simply about two horses drinking and resting near a lake in a mountainous area. However, as I began blocking out colors on the canvas, I realized that I was painting my subconscious. I've always felt as if I were abandoned in a cave, philosophizing about life. But now, there was a sense of safety and support, both personally and creatively. I recognized myself as the horse drinking in the background, protected by the blue horse. So, I decided to include a door to anywhere and myself in the painting, capturing the moment of introspection into my subconscious. This painting became incredibly therapeutic after I had this epiphany about my true feelings regarding recent events in my life. It has since become my favorite piece of work.
